ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team was unable to protect a late lead against Frostburg State as it lost a Mountain East Conference game, 2-1, to the Bobcats Sunday evening at Callaghan Stadium.
The Mountain Lions (8-3, 6-3 MEC) scored in the 21
st minute on a penalty kick by senior midfielder
Malher Santi Possu after he was taken in the bottom left corner of the penalty area to earn the attempt from the spot.
Concord took eight shots in the first half, but settled for the one-goal lead.
CU nearly doubled their lead in the 63
rd minute when a header off a corner from junior defender
Santiago Lopez hit the outside of the goal net. Lopez had another shot from 30 yards that sailed high in the 71
st minute.
Possu took his own strike in the 75
th minute that whistled past the goal to the left.
Still leading 1-0 in the 85
th minute, Concord watched Frostburg State (4-5-2, 4-4-1 MEC) equalize. And 30 seconds later, the Bobcats had the go-ahead goal.
Over the final five-plus minutes, the Mountain Lions only had one shot.
Concord had a 15-11 advantage in total shots in the game, but both teams recorded four shots on goal.
Possu led the CU offense with five shots. Lopez and junior forward
Dominique Malhomme each tallied three shots.
Senior goalkeeper
Nathan Scargill notched two saves, both in the first half.
Concord makes a long road trip to Pittsburgh 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to face Point Park.
