ELKINS, W.Va. – The Concord volleyball University team swept Davis & Elkins 3-0 to pick up a Mountain East Conference win at the McDonnell Center Friday night.
Â
Concord moves to 14-2 with the win and 4-1 against MEC competition. The set scores were 25-15, 25-22, and 25-23.
Â
In the first set, Concord quickly jumped out to a 7-1 lead, thanks in part to sophomore right side
Maddie Stull who picked up two early kills. The Senators were unable to close the gap and freshman middle hitter
Addison Adkins led the way with five kills at the end of the set as CU comfortably went ahead 1-0 in the match.
Â
The Senators played a much more competitive second set, but it was still the Mountain Lions who came out on top. D&E crept ahead to a 13-8 lead, but Concord clawed its way back into it, picking up two blocks in quick succession. From there it was back-and-forth until the end, but it was Concord's net presence that proved the difference. CU had four total blocks in the set, with junior middle hitter
Jasmine Anderson getting involved in all of them. Junior outside hitters
Chloe Thompson and
Meg Williams each collected three kills in the set.
Â
In the final set, it was another very close contest but Concord once again narrowly prevailed. CU started hot, growing a 10-3 lead very early on in the set after three early kills from Williams. Davis & Elkins kept fighting and battled the entire way to take a 21-20 lead late in the set. Stull showed off her clutch gene, racking up three kills in the last seven points, including the match winner. Concord hit their best percentage in the third set (.304).
Â
Offensively, Thompson finished with 11 kills and Williams tallied 12 as the outside hitters. Junior libero
Allie Davis led the way with 13 digs and junior setter
Paige Richmond totaled 18 assists. As a team, Concord finished with 41 kills on a .281 hitting percentage, the second-best hitting percentage of the season.
Â
The Mountain Lions return to the Carter Center for a matchup against Glenville State Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
