DAGGER AT THE BUZZER
CU started off the new year with a win over MEC Leader West Virginia Wesleyan at the buzzer, 74-73. The game featured six lead changes and four ties with two ties and two lead changes happening in the fourth quarter. The Mountain Lions led by as many as four halfway through the frame and trailed by one with three seconds on the clock. After a WVWC free throw gave the Bobcats the advantage, senior guard
Skylar Davidson launched a full-court pass to junior forward
Abbie Smith through two defenders to set up the game-winning shot. The win marked back-to-back victories for Concord over the league's top two teams in the standings in West Virginia Wesleyan and Fairmont State.
Â
TOP OF THE LEAGUE
Smith's buzzer beater gave her 30 points for the game, her first 30-point performance this season and the third of her career. Her other two 30-point performances came last winter when the Little Hocking, Ohio native scored exactly 30 points on the road at West Liberty, and in the MEC Tournament against Frostburg State. On the season, Smith raised her season scoring average to 18.3 points per game and ranks inside the top 30 in Division II. Smith trails only Frostburg State's Emilee Weakley and Wesleyan's Emma Witt in scoring in the MEC. She also hauled in 11 rebounds for a double-double and now ties for the MEC lead in rebounds per game at 10.8. Her eight double-doubles lead the conference and ties for third nationally in 13 games played.
