KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Concord University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to nationally-ranked, fifth-rated Gannon Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Keystone Field on the campus of Kutztown University.
Gannon (2-0) used a goal in the first half to grab an edge on the Mountain Lions (0-2) as GU found the back of the net in the 22
nd minute. Â
Concord nearly took an early advantage as senior forward
Sydney Tucker and junior forward
Holly Gray forced saved from Gannon's Morgan Sinan in the 14
th and 20
th minutes, respectively.
On the other side, freshman goalkeeper
Maddie Loughborough was called into action in the 42
nd and 44
th minutes to keep the game 1-0 as she stopped a pair of shots before halftime.
Two more saves by Loughborough in the 52
nd and 53
rd minute setup a chance for Tucker to even the game in the 61
st minute, but her attempt was wide. The luck got tougher in the 68
th minute as one of Gray's two shots on goal in the game was taken off the line to keep the 1-0 edge for the Golden Knights.
Just a minute later, freshman forward
Ella Rowell saw her shot saved. And junior forward
Caitlin Webster had an attempt turned aside in the 75
th minute.
The teams finished tied in shots at ten each with Gannon holding a 7-5 edge in shots on goal.
Gray took a team-high three shots while Tucker and Webster both accounted for two shots on the afternoon. Loughborough saved six shots.
The Mountain Lions held a lopsided 11-1 advantage in corner kicks, but was unable to convert a set piece.
After a week off, CU opens Mountain East Conference play at West Virginia Wesleyan 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 15.
