ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team saw Bluefield State score 16 unanswered points in the second quarter as it proved to be the difference in a 22-13 loss to the Big Blues Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.
The Mountain Lions (0-1) jumped up on Bluefield State (1-1) early as senior running back
JQ Brown capped a seven-play, 74-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown plunge at the 1:52 mark of the first quarter. The score was set up by a 42-yard strike from graduate quarterback
Blayne Ferguson to junior wide receiver
Jakari Clark who pushed CU inside the BSU 40-yard line. Later in the drive, Ferguson's 19-yard throw to senior tight end
Jordyn Bentley set up first-and-goal for Brown.
The second play of the second quarter resulted in a defensive touchdown for BSU as it got within 7-6.
Seven minutes later, the Big Blues struck for a 71-yard touchdown to go up 13-7 and added a 34-yard field goal with 3:53 remaining before halftime.

Concord cut into the six-point deficit with another Hutley field goal, this time from 34 yards, at the 6:35 mark of the third quarter to get within 16-13.
Bluefield State answered with a field goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter to go back up 19-13.
A Mountain Lions' turnover resulted in a short field for the Big Blues, and another field goal expanded the lead to 22-13 with 10:22 remaining.

TJ Finney kickstarted the ensuing Concord drive, and a strike from Ferguson to redshirt freshman wide receiver
Jamal Williams set up the Mountain Lions inside the Bluefield State 30-yard line, but an attempt to cut into the two-score deficit stalled.
Finney clipped off 137 yards on 28 carries. Ferguson finished with 207 yards through the air. The top receiver was Clark who hauled in six receptions for 75 yards.

Nehemiah Scott finished with nine tackle while adding 1.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore linebacker

Khwan Mickens each had seven tackles. Freshman defensive lineman
Jacorey Jackson had a strong debut with five tackles, including 2.5 for loss.
CU plays host to UVa.-Wise 3:00 p.m. Saturday, September 14 in a non-conference clash at Callaghan Stadium.
