ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University dropped a 28-0 non-conference game to UVa.-Wise Saturday afternoon at Callaghan Stadium.
UVa.-Wise (1-1) scored on its second possession of the game after a short field. Two possessions later, the Concord (0-2) defense got its first takeaway of the day as graduate defensive lineman
Vonte Pannell punched the ball out on a sack, and graduate linebacker
Jamari Smith pounced on the loose ball at the CU 42-yard line.
However, at the midway point of the second quarter Concord was unable to produce points with a shorter field.
The Cavaliers held a 7-0 lead until late in the second quarter when they finished off a 13-play, 67-yard drive with a touchdown with 29 seconds remaining in the first half.
On CU's second drive of the third quarter, the Mountain Lions' drive into Wise territory was halted by a turnover, and the Cavaliers scored on the ensuing drive to take the lead to 21-0 with 8:34 remaining in the period.
The Cavaliers tacked on a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Sophomore linebacker
Ryker Brown paced the Concord defense with 12 tackles, including two for loss. Sophomore defensive back
Nehemiah Scott made 11 tackles with eight being of the solo variety. Smith chipped in 10 tackles to go with his second-quarter fumble recovery.
Graduate quarterback
Blayne Ferguson threw for 174 yards on the afternoon. Junior wide receiver
Jakari Clark reeled in four receptions for 72 yards.
The Mountain Lions begin Mountain East Conference play Saturday, September 21 at Frostburg State. Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m.
