Concord Falls at Home Against UVa.-Wise

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University dropped a 28-0 non-conference game to UVa.-Wise Saturday afternoon at Callaghan Stadium.

UVa.-Wise (1-1) scored on its second possession of the game after a short field. Two possessions later, the Concord (0-2) defense got its first takeaway of the day as graduate defensive lineman Vonte Pannell punched the ball out on a sack, and graduate linebacker Jamari Smith pounced on the loose ball at the CU 42-yard line.

However, at the midway point of the second quarter Concord was unable to produce points with a shorter field.

The Cavaliers held a 7-0 lead until late in the second quarter when they finished off a 13-play, 67-yard drive with a touchdown with 29 seconds remaining in the first half.

On CU's second drive of the third quarter, the Mountain Lions' drive into Wise territory was halted by a turnover, and the Cavaliers scored on the ensuing drive to take the lead to 21-0 with 8:34 remaining in the period.

The Cavaliers tacked on a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Sophomore linebacker Ryker Brown paced the Concord defense with 12 tackles, including two for loss. Sophomore defensive back Nehemiah Scott made 11 tackles with eight being of the solo variety. Smith chipped in 10 tackles to go with his second-quarter fumble recovery.
