Concord Picks Up 5-1 Win at Glenville State, Svensson Nets Hat Trick

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team scored four of its five goals in the first half on its way to a 5-1 win at Glenville State Sunday night in a Mountain East Conference game at Morris Stadium.

Freshman midfielder Marika Svensson powered the offense with her first career hat trick—the 17th hat trick in program history since 2013. Svensson's hat trick was the first for a CU freshman since Rachel Bell in September 2019.

The Jaegerspris, Denmark native scored goals in the 15th, 37th and 81st minutes. Svensson's first goal was a half volley off a failed clearance after a corner kick from 15 yards. She connected on a penalty kick in the 37th minute and finished off her hat trick with a goal from 30 yards in the 81st minute.

After Svensson's first goal, junior midfielder Jessica Neville scored directly off a corner kick as she twisted a shot over the goal line in the 32nd minute. And freshman forward Taryn Kelly came off the bench and scored in the run of play four seconds before halftime.

Concord (3-3-1, 3-1-1 MEC) owned a 16-10 shots advantage with 10 shots coming in the first half. Svensson recorded six shots with all three of her shots on goal finding the back of the net. Junior forward Caitlin Webster racked up four shots.

Freshman goalkeeper Gabby Griffith stopped four of the five GSU (3-4, 1-4 MEC) shots on frame.

CU remains on the road to begin MEC North competition 7:00 p.m. Wednesday against Fairmont State.
