FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team was clipped by Fairmont State, 2-1, Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference game at Duvall-Rosier Field.
A Fairmont State (5-2-1, 4-1 MEC) goal in the 50
th minute was the difference in the game.
FSU struck first as it scored off a shot from distance in the 27
th minute, however, junior forward
Caitlin Webster equalized in the 32
nd minute to level the game for CU (3-4-1, 3-2-1 MEC) at halftime.
Out of the locker room, senior forward
Sydney Tucker found herself alone with the goalkeeper, but was denied Concord's first lead of the game in the 46
th minute. It was Fairmont State that scored off a throw in, in the 50
th minute.
Over the final 30 minutes of the game, the Mountain Lions peppered the goal with a multitude of chances. Webster had a shot saved in the 60
th minute, freshman midfielder
Ailsa Swinburne was turned away in the 61
st minute.
A pair of shots missed the target for freshman midfielder
Tiana Campbell in the 65
th and 82
nd minutes.
Off the bench, it appeared that senior forward
Nora Voisey may find the game-tying goal in the 89
th minute as her shot was bobbled by the goalkeeper and just stayed off the goal line, allowing Fairmont State to edge Concord.
Tucker sprayed a shot off the left post in the third minute, and the rebound shot by freshman midfielder
Marika Svensson was saved.
Concord owned a 14-9 edge in total shots. Swinburne (four) and Webster (three) led the CU offensive attack with three other players tallying two shots.
Freshman goalkeeper
Gabby Griffith recorded five saves in the game.
The Mountain Lions will be at home 1:00 p.m. Sunday to face Salem at Callaghan Stadium. It will be Senior Day.
