ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw with Frostburg State Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.
Trailing since the 36
th minute of the contest, Concord was ensured of a tie after junior forward
Richard Henry equalized in the 89
th minute. A cross was fired into the 18-yard box by Concord (4-1-2, 4-1-2 MEC). Sophomore forward
Syrus Conolly possessed for CU and moved a pass along for Henry who scored for the second straight game inside the left post.
Frostburg State (5-1-1, 3-1-1 MEC) used a penalty kick in the first half to take a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Out of the locker room, CU found a wave of momentum.
Henry was on 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper in the 48
th minute, but was turned away at the top of the penalty area. From the 57
th to 60
th minutes, the Mountain Lions recorded two corner kicks and four shots—two by Henry and one each from junior defenders
Kai Forsyth and
Erik Lotysz—but were kept off the scoreboard.
Forsyth had another look at goal in the 64
th minute off a corner kick, but the attempt sailed high.
Frostburg State was able to stem the tide and appeared to be on its way to its second win over a nationally-ranked team this season, but Henry was able to manage a point for the Mountain Lions with his late equalizer at 88:13.
Concord owned a 15-8 shots advantage in the game, including doubling up FSU, 10-5, in the second half. The Mountain Lions took a season-high 11 corner kicks.
Henry notched seven shots with three on goal. Forsyth and Lotysz from their central defending spots tallied two shots each.
The 15
th-ranked Mountain Lions begin a two-game, non-conference stretch 4:00 p.m. Wednesday at Shaw.
