ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team was able to contain nationally-ranked Charleston for the first quarter before the Golden Eagles defeated Concord 42-7 Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.
The Mountain Lions (0-4, 0-2 MEC) forced a three-and-out and a missed field goal on the first two UC (4-0, 2-0 MEC) drives. However, Charleston scored on its next four possessions to open up a 28-0 lead at halftime.
CU did put together a 10-play, 47-yard drive in the middle of the second quarter, but stalled out at Charleston 30-yard line on downs.
Concord's touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 79-yard completion from freshman quarterback
Tristan Gabrels to sophomore wide receiver
Zion Odoms—the first career touchdown for both players. It was the longest pass play from scrimmage for CU since an 89-yard pass completion from
Jack Mangel to Tywan Pearce at Fairmont State in 2021.
The defense was paced by graduate defensive lineman
Jaylen Dollar who amassed a career-best 11 tackles. Sophomore defensive back
Kendall Bournes racked up 10 tackles and sophomore linebacker
Ryker Brown made eight tackles. Graduate defensive lineman
Delando Morris had CU's lone sack on the day.
Freshman wide receiver
Marcus Striggles caught a team-best eight passes for 42 yards. Spurred by his touchdown, Odoms rolled up 83 receiving yards on two receptions.
The Mountain Lions begin a two-game road stretch 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 5 at West Liberty.
