Concord Stymied at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Concord University football team lost to West Liberty 31-10 Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest at West Family Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Hilltoppers (1-4, 1-2 MEC) scored on their first two possessions to lead 14-0 just over 11 minutes into the game. WLU added a third touchdown at the 7:50 mark of the second quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, freshman wide receiver Cartaveon Valentine pushed Concord (0-5, 0-3 MEC) into West Liberty territory with a 33-yard return.

A 21-yard completion by freshman quarterback Tristan Gabrels to freshman wide receiver Marcus Striggles coupled with a roughing the passer penalty got CU into field goal range for graduate kicker/punter Josh Hutley to connect on a career-long, 38-yard field goal with 2:55 until halftime.

The Hilltoppers added a field goal early in the third quarter, but two West Liberty possessions later sophomore defensive back Kendall Bournes stalled the drive with a red zone interception, the first of his career.

Down 24-3 at the midway point of the third quarter, CU used the Bournes' takeaway and drove the field to the West Liberty 28-yard line, however, the drive halted with penalties.

Each team scored in the fourth quarter, including junior quarterback Kameron Howard finding Striggles in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown with just over a minute left.

Striggles led the Mountain Lions in receiving with four receptions for 55 yards and a score. Freshman running back Jaden Judge ran five times for 50 yards.

Sophomore linebacker Ryker Brown racked up 11 tackles to pace the defense. Bournes added eight tackles and a tackle for loss to go with his interception.

Concord wraps up a two-game road trip at West Virginia State at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 12.
