Concord Falls at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University football team lost 44-14 to West Virginia State Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Dickerson Stadium.

Both teams drove into opponent territory to start the game, but the defenses muscled up to force punts. However, West Virginia State broke (5-1, 4-0 MEC) the stalemate with a 12-play, 96-yard drive as it scored on fourth down inside the 10-yard line with 2:37 left in the first quarter.

On the second CU (0-6, 0-4 MEC) drive, the Mountain Lions once again moved the ball inside West Virginia State territory, to the 20-yard line, but was unable to produce points with a missed field goal early in the second quarter. Concord was able to keep WVSU out of the end zone until the 6:21 mark of the second quarter.

The Yellow Jackets added two more touchdowns before halftime to lead 28-0 at the break.

Concord got on the board in the final 10 seconds of the third quarter as freshman running back Jaden Judge rushed nine yards for his first career touchdown. The score was set up by CU converting a fourth-and-16 from its own 42-yard line as graduate quarterback Blayne Ferguson found freshman wide receiver Marcus Striggles for a 49-yard completion.

The Mountain Lions scored again in the fourth quarter with Ferguson linking up with senior tight end Jordyn Bentley for a 40-yard score. It was the second straight season that Bentley has scored versus West Virginia State.

Ferguson finished 7-of-16 through the air with 161 yards and the score. Striggles amassed 61 receiving yards on three catches. Bentley added three more catches for 49 yards and his first touchdown of the year. Judge rushed 13 times for 53 yards and a score while hauling in a team-best five receptions for 51 yards.

Junior defensive back Khwan Mickens made nine tackles (all solo). Graduate linebacker Jamari Smith threw in seven tackles and a sack. Sophomore linebacker Ryker Brown and senior linebacker Samaj Washington both had seven tackles apiece.

CU welcomes Glenville State for Homecoming 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 19 at Callaghan Stadium.
