Concord Set Back By Charleston

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team lost 3-0 to Charleston Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.

CU (2-3-1, 2-1-1 MEC) controlled the run of play in the first half, but only had four shots to show for—all off target. Concord almost got an own goal from Charleston (4-2, 4-0 MEC) in the 15th minute, and tallied two corner kicks consecutively after the nervous moment for the Golden Eagles.

The second half was more balanced as Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute on a strike from outside the 18-yard box. UC scored two more times after Concord giveaways in the defensive half—in the 64th and 76th minutes.

Junior forward Caitlin Webster attempted to curl one of her two shots in the game into the goal in the 78th minute, but the shot was off line. Junior midfielder Jessica Neville had the last CU shot of the contest with a rising attempt high in the 85th minute.

The Mountain Lions outshot Charleston for the game, 10-9, but none of the shots were on frame. Freshman defender Ella Rowell recorded three shots. Neville and Webster each had two shots.

Freshman goalkeeper Gabby Griffith was in goal for 59 minutes as she replaced freshman goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough who left with injury. Griffith made two saves in the contest.

Concord begins a two-game road trip 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Glenville State.
