Concord Surges in Second Half for 4-0 Win at West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team scored four times in the second half as it rolled a 4-0 road win over West Virginia Wesleyan at Culpepper Stadium Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference game.

After a first half that featured just seven total shots, Concord (3-0-1, 3-0-1 MEC) exploded in the second half as it scored twice in the first 15 minutes after halftime, and added two more goals in the final 10 minutes.

After an initial corner kick was cleared out by the West Virginia Wesleyan (1-3, 1-3 MEC) defense, a cross came back into the six-yard box where junior forward Richard Henry headed the ball onto the foot of sophomore forward Ignacio Alvarez Maina who scored his second goal of the season in the 49th minute.

In the 58th minute, junior midfielder Darian Bradshaw lifted a pass to junior midfielder Malher Santi Possu who raced past the defense for a goal from just outside the penalty area. It was Possu's second goal of the season.

Henry was in the middle of the scoring in the 81st minute. After gaining control on a pass down the touch line, Henry crossed the ball from right to left across the top of the 18-yard box where freshman midfielder Kyle Gordon ran onto the ball for his first career goal.

Less than 90 seconds later, sophomore forward Syrus Conolly capped the scoring with a goal in the 82nd minute. Senior forward Fabian Amhof got his first assist of the season.

After the evenly-played first 45 minutes, Concord ruled the run of play in the second half as it outshot WVWC 16-8 in the second half, and 19-12 for the contest. Gordon took three shots while four other players had two shots.

Junior goalkeeper Miguel Oliveria stopped three shots while the CU defense also took two potential goals off the line.

The Mountain Lions return home to face Wheeling 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Callaghan Stadium.
