ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team was able to fend off Wheeling for a 3-1 win Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest at Callaghan Stadium.
The Mountain Lions (4-0-1, 4-0-1 MEC) got off to a fast start as a set piece in the eighth minute produced the first goal.
A free kick from inside 25 yards taken by junior defender
Ted Roberts connected with the head of sophomore forward
Syrus Conolly inside the six-yard box for his team-best fourth goal of the fall.
With Concord pressing to find the game's next goal, it was Wheeling (0-4-2, 0-3-1 MEC) that scored to tie the game in the 30
th minute. After a rebound could not be cleared out of the attacking area, the Cardinals hit the net for the goal.
However, the Maroon and Gray had a response in the 37
th minute as WU was unable to clear away a corner kicker. The ball stayed in the penalty area where senior defender
Kai Forsyth flicked on for Roberts to bury his second goal of the season.
The Mountain Lions had to stave off several Wheeling attempts in the second half to keep the one-goal lead. And in the 78
th minute, junior midfielder
Darian Bradshaw struck for his first goal of the season to pad the advantage.
CU owned a 12-7 advantage in shots, but just a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Conolly and junior forward
Richard Henry each recorded three shots.
Junior goalkeeper
Miguel Oliveria tallied three saves—all in the second half.
Concord travels to nationally-ranked Charleston 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in a battle between the top two teams in the MEC.
