Concord Eases Way to 4-0 Win in Home Opener Versus West Liberty

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 win over West Liberty Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.

After WLU (0-2-1, 0-2 MEC) controlled the first 15 minutes of the game, Concord (2-0-0, 2-0-0 MEC) took command of the contest for the remainder of the half.

Sophomore defender Zakari Messam found the back of the net in the 38th minute after a long throw-in by Concord was unable to cleared out by the Hilltoppers. Messam struck the ball across the face of goal and into the top left corner.

It wasn't until the 57th minute that the Mountain Lions doubled their lead. On the third corner kick of the game, junior defender Ted Roberts found sophomore forward Ignacio Alvarez Maina for a goal off the set piece.

Robert was responsible for third goal of the game as his blast from the top right corner of the 18-yard box from a free kick found its way to the top left corner of the net in the 74th minute.

The final goal of the contest came in the run of play as a counter from the Mountain Lions in the 78th minute turned into the second goal of the season for junior forward Syrus Conolly.

On the back end, CU's defense only allowed three of the 11 shots for the Hilltoppers to be on target as junior goalkeeper Nathan Scargill notched his first shutout of the season, making three saves.

Concord held a 15-11 advantage in total shots, and outshot WLU 8-3 in attempts on frame.

The Mountain Lions were able to spread the attack around Wednesday with no player taking more than two shots. Alvarez and junior forward Richard Henry both had two shots on goal.

Despite the lopsided win for CU, the possession in the game finished 50-50 as Concord made the most of its scoring chances.

The Mountain Lions travel to Davis & Elkins 2:00 p.m. Sunday for an MEC contest.
