BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Concord University Athletic Department has finished seventh in the 2023-24 Mountain East Conference Commissioner's Cup Standings, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The MEC uses an all-sports rating to determine the standings each year. The all-sports rating is the total number of points that an institution compiles divided by the number of sports offered. Points are awarded based on the number of institutions that sponsor a sport. First place receives the number of points equal to the number of teams, last place receives one point. An extra point is given to conference tournament champions in applicable sports.
Concord gained 75 points out of a possible 161 to finish with a rating of 0.465. Charleston was first with a total of 1.019. Frostburg State (0.711), Fairmont State (.689), West Liberty (.571) and Glenville State (.512) rounded out the top five.
Davis & Elkins (.475), Concord and Wheeling (.455) were bunched together at six, seven and eight. Notre Dame (.437), West Virginia Wesleyan (.418) and West Virginia State (.413) rounded out this year's standings.
Among the 2023-24 highlights for the Mountain Lions were men's basketball and women's soccer both finishing in the top three of the MEC standings and making the NCAA Division II Tournament—although national tournament appearances are not factored into MEC Commissioner's Cup formula. Men's and women's cross country were both inside the top three at the MEC Championship.
Men's soccer, volleyball and women's basketball added to the highlights with top six or better finishes in their respective standings in 2023-24.
