Concord Falls in Doubleheader at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Concord University baseball team dropped a pair of Mountain East Conference games to nationally-ranked Charleston at the Welch Athletic Complex Friday evening.

After the doubleheader, CU falls to 24-16 overall and 14-10 against MEC competition, while Charleston improves to 34-7 overall and 21-3 in MEC games.

Game One: Charleston 6 - Concord 2
UC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one and never looked back.

Concord got on the board in the fourth inning when junior outfielder Demetri Jamison and senior first baseman Chris Satcher were hit by pitches in back-to-back at bats. Then, senior first baseman Michael Dupont singled into right field, loading the bases with one out. With two outs in the frame, sophomore utility Dawson Gragg drew a walk to bring in Concord's first run.

Charleston added two more in the bottom of the fifth to bring the scoring to 4-1.

Gragg and junior infielder/pitcher Brendan Brady reached base to begin the sixth inning. With two outs, junior utility MJ Hunter hit a ball into right field that scored Gragg, cutting into the Charleston lead, 4-2.

The Golden Eagles plated two more runs in the sixth to close out game one, 6-2.

Graduate pitcher Andrew Neff (6-4) took the loss, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts across 6.0 innings.

Gragg was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.

Game Two: Charleson 6 - Concord 0
Like game one, UC jumped on the board early to grab the doubleheader sweep.

Four runs across the first two innings propelled Charleston to a 4-0 lead.

Satcher was hit by a pitch in the second inning, but was unable to get around the bases. Jamison was Concord's second base runner, drawing a hit by pitch in the fourth inning with two outs. A fly out the next at bat stranded Jamison to end the inning.

Brady reached base on a Golden Eagles error to lead off the sixth inning. However, UC's two runs in the fifth and sixth innings were enough to secure the game two victory, 6-0.

Graduate pitcher Eddie Blake fell to 5-4 on the mound, giving up five earned runs and fanning five UC batters in 6.0 innings.

CU finishes the series against Charleston Sunday at Welch Athletic Complex Sunday starting at 1:00 p.m.
