Andrew Neff is seeking become the second pitcher in the history of the MEC to amass 30 career wins—the other is former Charleston ace Austin Henrich (2017-21) who had 31 wins. Neff has a career record of 29-10 after picking up the victory over West Virginia State last weekend. Neff has at least five strikeouts in his last three starts.
GOOD PITCHING AND GOOD HITTING
This weekend features one of the best offenses in the MEC going up against one of the best pitching staffs in the league. Concord's .345 team batting average is tied for third in Division II. CU has six hitters that start the weekend with an average of at least .345, including Saryeldin (.430), Satcher (.421), junior outfielder
Demetri Jamison (.385), graduate infielder
Daniel Layne (.364), senior infielder
Michael Dupont (.361) and sophomore utility
Dawson Gragg (.345). Jamison has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games with 11 of those being multi-hit games. Layne has at least one hit in 19 of 22 conference games this year. And Dupont has hit safely in seven of his last eight games. Charleston is one of two teams in the MEC with an ERA under 4.2 this season as it checks in with a 4.06 ERA. Nine UC pitchers have at least 10 innings pitched, but only three of those nine have more than 30 innings on the mound.
REVISITING THE RIVALRY
Charleston has won six of the last eight regular-season meetings, and the teams have also met in the MEC Tournament in each of the last three postseasons. UC won a 21-11 slugfest last year in an elimination game at the MEC Tournament. Layne was 3-for-4. Junior utility
MJ Hunter drove in three runs. Charleston also won in 2022, but Neff stymied the Golden Eagles in the 2021 postseason. He struck out nine over 7.2 innings and allowed just one run. Neff is 2-1 versus UC in his career. In five career games, Layne is 9-for-16 against Charleston. Saryeldin has a larger sample size of 13-for-38 with eight RBI and four extra-base hits (two doubles, two home runs) versus the Golden Eagles.
