LET IT FLY
In extending its win streak to 12 games, CU tied the single-game program record with five home runs in a 13-5 win at UVa.-Wise Tuesday. CU's 12-game winning streak is the second longest active in Division II. Fifth-year senior infielder
Zack Saryeldin launched his 11
th home run of the season, and his 25
th career Tuesday. Saryeldin is tied for second in the MEC in homers with teammate and senior infielder
Chris Satcher. WVSU's Mike Huber paces the conference with 12 home runs. Freshman catcher
Marshall Basham hit his third home run of the season, all in non-conference play, at UVa.-Wise. Graduate infielder
Daniel Layne blasted his first home run of the season while sophomore utility
Dawson Gragg had his second home run of the year. Junior outfielder
Austin Amtower recorded his first career homer at UVa.-Wise. CU's 38 home runs this spring are the most since the 2012 squad hit 42.
KEEP CLIMBING
While Saryeldin (.426) and Satcher (.402) pace Concord's offense with two of the top four batting averages in the MEC, the Mountain Lions' team batting average of .344 which is top 10 nationally is linked to the success of junior outfielder
Demetri Jamison, Gragg, junior utility
MJ Hunter and Layne. After the March 12 game against Emory & Henry, Jamison was batting .236, but has raised his average to .385—he has had a high-water mark of .390 this season. The Mechanicsville, Maryland native has multiple hits in nine of his last 13 games. Layne's average has teetered around .350 all season even though he is a career .330 hitter. Hunter hit below .300 in his first season at CU, but enters Saturday with a .333 average. Gragg has seen a near 40-point hike in his average so far in April. He entered the month hitting .294 and is now batting .333.
NAIL BITERS
Nine of the last 18 games between Concord and West Virginia State have been decided by one run with six of those nine having the score line of 3-2. Graduate pitcher
Andrew Neff has been on the winning side of two 3-2 games over the last two years. In his last two starts versus the Yellow Jackets, Neff has tossed 13 innings, striking out 13 and allowing four earned runs—two in each appearance. Junior pitcher
Rylee Nicholas allowed two earned runs over six innings last year at WVSU in a 6-2 Concord victory. As has become customary, this weekend's series will have MEC Tournament implications. Concord starts the weekend one game behind WVSU for second in the MEC South, but also just one game ahead of Glenville State for third place. The top three teams from each division qualify for the MEC Tournament.
