Concord Picks Up Game One Shutout in Doubleheader Split Versus Frostburg State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team split a doubleheader against Frostburg State Saturday afternoon as both teams recorded shutouts in Mountain East Conference action at the CU Softball Field.

Concord won the first game 3-0, and now sits at 22-18 overall and 10-10 in the MEC. Frostburg State picked up a 2-0 win in the nightcap, and is now 22-12 overall and 12-4 in conference play.

Game 1: Concord 3 – Frostburg State 0
Two runs in the first inning was more than enough for sophomore pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis in the circle.

Hollis helped her own cause with a two-run double in the first inning. After infield singles by junior utility Kylee Stacy and senior outfielder Imani Campbell got the inning start, a sacrifice bunt pushed both runners into scoring potion. The next batter, Hollis, sent a double into right field to give CU the early edge.

Hollis got out of a small jam in the second inning as two batters reached with two outs, but a flyout sent Concord to the bat rack.

In the fourth inning, back-to-back two-out singles brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but a popup kept Concord's lead intact. Frostburg State threatened again in the sixth with a pair of hits, but a foul pop gloved by sophomore catcher Morgan Gleason got Hollis out of the tight spot.

The Mountain Lions gave Hollis some insurance in the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman infielder Kendall Morgan led off the frame with a single before sophomore infielder Morgan Cline walked. Three batters later with two outs and two runners in scoring position, an infield single by Gleason scored junior outfielder Delaney Fulk who was pinch running for Cline.

Hollis polished her off her second complete-game shutout this season by getting FSU in order in the top of the seventh. The McMinnville, Tennessee native needed just 79 pitches to improve to 9-9 this season. She scattered six hits and notched two strikeouts.

Gleason and Hollis were both 2-for-3 at the plate. Hollis drove in two runs on her ninth double of the year.

Game 2: Frostburg State 2 – Concord 0
CU was unable to solve Katie Chapple in game two as the Bobcats answered with a shutout after Concord's shutout in game one.

Both offenses were held down in the early going as senior pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts retired six of the first seven batters she faced before a botched double steal attempt by the Bobcats ended a threat in the third.

Singles by redshirt freshman outfielder Sophia Conger and Gleason put two runners on base in the bottom of the third with out one, but CU could not bring across any runs.

A one-out home run in the top of the fourth broke the scoreless deadlock. And FSU tacked on a run in the top of the fifth with a two-out RBI single.

After being retired in order in the fifth and the sixth innings, Concord pieced together a small rally in the bottom of the seventh.

Hollis led off the frame with a double to right center field, but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple. Two batters later, Cline singled to left field, but Concord was unable to threaten any further.

Roberts (10-6) tossed five innings as she allowed two runs on six hits while striking out two. Five different Mountain Lions accounted for hits with only Hollis' double going for extra bases.

Concord welcomes Fairmont State for a 1:00 p.m. Sunday doubleheader at the CU Softball Field.
