WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Concord University softball team lost its final two games at The Spring Games, falling 7-6 to Thomas More and dropping a 5-1 decision to Goldey-Beacom.
CU comes back from Florida with a record of 10-8 on the season.
Game 1: Thomas More 7 – Concord 6
The Mountain Lions led 6-1 through 3.5 innings, but saw TMU plate three runs each in both the bottom of the fourth and bottom of the fifth.
RBI singles from freshman infielder
Kendall Morgan and sophomore infielder/pitcher
Madison Hollis with two outs pushed Concord in front 2-0 after a half inning.
After Thomas More sliced the deficit in half in the bottom of the third, Concord rallied for four runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Once again, two-out hitting paved the way for the scoring. With two runners in scoring position, sophomore infielder
Lacie Lewis drove in junior infielder
Kassidy Garvey and junior utility
Kylee Stacy with a base knock. Later in the inning, Lewis and junior infielder
Courtney Raines crossed home on Morgan's two-out double.
The Saints got to within 6-4 in the bottom half of the inning, and took their first lead in the bottom of the fifth.
The Mountain Lions would threaten in the seventh. A one-out error put the tying run on base. Then, sophomore catcher/utility
Morgan Gleason stole second base. A walk to senior catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett and a subsequent passed ball pushed the go-ahead run into scoring position. However, a strikeout ended the game.
Hollis, Morgan and Stacy were all 2-for-4 in the contest with Morgan driving in three runs. Lewis added two RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman pitcher
Josi Ervin was the pitcher of record as she allowed three runs in two innings of relief.
Game 2: Goldey-Beacom 5 – Concord 1
CU's bats were cooled off by Goldey-Beacom pitching in the second game of the day as GBC's Morgan McLane limited Concord to three hits.
The Lightning broke a 0-0 stalemate with a three-run fourth inning.
Up to that point, senior pitcher
Nancy-Jo Roberts had stranded five runners on base to keep the game scoreless.
GBC padded its lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Back-to-back doubles from Lewis and Raines in the bottom of the seventh accounted for the Mountain Lions' scoring in the contest.
Lewis was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the final game of the week. Raines was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Roberts gave up three earned runs over seven innings as she struck out two.
The Mountain Lions will make up their postponed games from earlier in the month with Bluefield State Wednesday beginning at 4:00 p.m.
