WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Concord University softball team went 1-1 Thursday morning at The Spring Games as it defeated Minnesota State 5-1, but fell to Minnesota-Crookston, 7-6.
The Mountain Lions grabbed their 10
th win of the season with the first-game victory, and are now 10-6.
Game 1: Concord 5 – Minnesota State 1
A five-run second inning was all senior pitcher
Nancy-Jo Roberts needed in support as she twirled a complete game, allowing one unearned run.
A one-out error got things started for CU in the home half of the second. A single from sophomore infielder
Morgan Cline followed. However, it appeared MSU might get out of the jam with a strikeout. With two outs, sophomore catcher/utility
Morgan Gleason singled to plate freshman infielder
Kendall Morgan. And senior catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett backed up the RBI single with her own run-scoring knock to double the lead.
Now with the bases loaded, sophomore infielder
Lacie Lewis sprayed a base hit to right field to bring in three runs.
In the circle, Roberts only allowed four runners past first base in the contest. She struck out five and faced the minimum in both the first and third innings. The only time the Mavericks had multiple runners on base at the same against Roberts in the seventh.
Roberts improved to 4-2 on the year.
Seven different players accounted for the CU hits. Lewis tallied three RBI, and Gleason and Privett had one RBI apiece.
Game 2: Minnesota-Crookston 7 – Concord 6
A back-and-forth contest saw UMC hold off Concord in the seventh inning.
Each team scored in the first inning with Lewis coming around on Morgan's RBI single.
Trailing 4-1 entering the third, the Mountain Lions went ahead with a four-run frame. The scoring began with an RBI base hit from sophomore utility
Kayla Sholter. After two runners got pushed into scoring position on a wild pitch, Gleason's base hit into center field knotted the game, 4-4. A steal of second by Gleason, and a base hit to left gave Concord the edge.
The Golden Eagles tallied three runs in the fifth to regain a 7-5 lead.
But, the Maroon and Gray wasn't done as they pieced a rally together in the seventh.
A hit by pitch and single pushed the go-ahead run to the plate with one out. Two batters later, another run-scoring hit brought in pinch runner and junior outfielder
Delaney Fulk with two out.
Minnesota-Crookston was able to retire the final batter for the one-run victory.
Morgan went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Sholter was 2-for-4 with two RBI from the seven spot in the order. And Gleason added two RBI.
Sophomore pitcher/infielder
Madison Hollis (4-3) was tagged with the loss as she tossed four innings of relief and gave up three unearned runs.
Concord wraps up its Florida trip 9:00 a.m. Friday versus Thomas More and 11:15 a.m. against Goldey-Beacom.
