ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University Athletic Department mourns the loss of former football head coach Tony Colobro.
Coach Colobro passed away over the weekend at the age of 100.
One of the most decorated coaches in the history of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) and at Concord, Colobro won five WVIAC Championship between 1976-1981 (1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981). Prior to Colobro arriving at Concord in 1974, the Mountain Lions had only won six total games in the previous five seasons.
Over his nine seasons on the sidelines as the Mountain Lions' head coach, Colobro amassed a record of 70-26-3—a winning percentage of 72.2. Colobro had a winning record in each of his nine seasons. He was honored as the WVIAC Coach of the Year five times.
"Coach Colobro was loved and admired by everyone that he encountered throughout his 100 years of life," Concord Director of Athletics Kevin Garrett said. "He set the standard for Concord football that is still followed even today. In my many conversations with Coach Colobro over the years, he was a great resource from me personally. He taught me life lessons, how to handle coaching situations and players. I become a better coach and person every time we talked. I will miss him dearly."
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family as well as his former players here at Concord during this difficult time," Garrett said.
Under Coach Colobro, Concord made the NAIA Playoffs four times in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Twelve of Colobro's former players have been inducted into the Concord Hall of Fame, and in 1985 Colobro was inducted into the NAIA National Hall of Fame.
