Concord Splits Pair of Home Games Against West Virginia State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team lost game one, 5-0, and won game two, 5-2, in a doubleheader against Mountain East Conference opponent West Virginia State Sunday afternoon at the CU Softball Field.

With the split, CU is now 13-11 on the season and 1-3 in MEC play, while West Virginia State moves to 10-13 overall and 2-2 in MEC play.

Game 1: West Virginia State 5 – Concord 0
WVSU got on the board in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, senior outfielder Imani Campbell, graduate outfielder Jolie Privett, and junior infielder Kylee Stacy loaded the bases on three consecutive two-out singles. A CU strikeout ended the inning, stranding all three Mountain Lions on base.

CU placed two more runners on base in the third inning with singles from freshman infielder Kendall Morgan and sophomore pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis. After a fielder's choice later in the inning, CU was unable to plate any runs as WVSU led 1-0 after four complete innings.

The Yellow Jackets added two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 5-0.

Despite a double from junior infielder Courtney Raines in the fifth and a single from sophomore infielder Lacie Lewis in the sixth, CU was unable to cut into the West Virginia State lead and eventually fell in game one, 5-0.

Senior pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts fell to 5-5 in the circle as she allowed two earned runs and 11 hits across seven innings.

Game 2: Concord 5 – West Virginia State 2
Game two of the twinbill started slow, as both teams were locked in a 0-0 standoff through the first four innings.

Lewis broke the silence in the bottom of the fifth with her team-leading fourth home run of the season to lead, 1-0.

Junior outfielder Delaney Fulk got the bottom of the sixth started with a leadoff walk followed by back-to-back bunt singles by Stacy and Campbell to load the bases.

Raines then delivered a two-RBI single through the left side to extend the lead, 3-0. Two batters later, Hollis added an RBI single that plated Campbell. The next at bat, Lewis dove a double down the left field line to cap off the big inning, taking the lead to 5-0.

WVSU made a late run, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh but was unable to do any more damage as Concord picked up its first MEC win, 5-2.

Hollis improved to 6-4 in the circle, allowing five hits and two earned runs across seven innings. She struck out two WVSU hitters.

Lewis recorded her seventh multi-RBI game this spring, while Raines notched her fifth multi-RBI performance at the plate. Campbell also logged two hits at the dish.

Concord continues its MEC homestand Wednesday, hosting Glenville State for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m. at the CU Softball Field.
