ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team split a Wednesday doubleheader versus Glenville State, losing 4-1 and winning 4-2, in Mountain East Conference play at the CU Softball.
Concord is now 14-12 overall and 2-4 against MEC foes. GSU has the same MEC record and is 8-9 this season.
Game 1: Glenville State 4 – Concord 1
Neither team could find consistent offense until the Mountain Lions broke the stalemate in the fifth, but Glenville State scored the game's final four runs.
A one-out single in the fifth inning by sophomore catcher/outfielder
Morgan Gleason gave Concord just its third hit of the day. A wild pitch pushed Gleason to second base before a clutch two-out single from graduate outfielder
Jolie Privett plated Gleason.
But, the Pioneers were quick to answer as they got a leadoff home run in the sixth inning to tie the game. Three batters later with two on base, GSU's Shelby McDaniels smacked a triple down the right field line to take a 3-1 lead.
Glenville State added a run in the seventh to build a three-run cushion.
Privett was 1-for-3 with an RBI. No Mountain Lion reached base twice.
Sophomore pitcher/infielder
Madison Hollis (6-5) tossed 5.1 innings as she allowed three earned runs on eight hits. She started the game by retiring 10 of the first 13 batters she faced and stranded the bases loaded in the fourth to keep the game scoreless.
Game 2: Concord 4 – Glenville State 2
The Mountain Lions opened up a 3-0 lead and fended off a late GSU rally to secure a split.
A two-out RBI double by junior infielder
Courtney Raines scored junior utility
Kylee Stacy after her one-out single in the third inning.
Concord was able to add two more runs in the fourth inning.
With one on and one out, sophomore catcher/utility
Kayla Sholter singled into right field, but allowed junior infielder Kassidy to score from first base and allowed Sholter to slide into third base. After a bunt single from Privett put runners on the corners, Stacy lofted a single into left field, plating Sholter.
GSU broke up a shutout bid by senior pitcher
Nancy-Jo Roberts in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly.
However, Concord restored a three-run edge in the bottom of the sixth as Raines' one-out single brought in Privett who led off the frame with an infield base hit.
Trailing 4-1, Glenville State loaded the bases in the seventh with three straight two-out singles. A fourth single brought in a run, but Roberts induced a pop up in foul territory to end the threat.
Stacy paced the offense in game two by going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Raines was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Privett added two hits and a run scored at the bottom of the order.
Roberts (6-5) scattered seven hits—four of them in the seventh inning—over seven innings, allowing two runs while tallying two strikeouts.
CU continues its season-long, 10-game homestand when welcomes Davis & Elkins 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
