Concord Drops Doubleheader Against Nationally-Ranked Charleston

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team lost to 16th-ranked Charleston, 6-1 and 5-0, to start Mountain East Conference play at the CU Softball Field Saturday afternoon.

The Mountain Lions fall to 12-8 on the season and 0-2 in the MEC, while the Golden Eagles improve to 14-1 and 2-0 in MEC play.

Game 1: Charleston 6 – Concord 1
UC got on the board first, scoring a run in each of the first two innings.

In the bottom of the second, sophomore first baseman Morgan Cline connected on her first home run of the season to cut into UC's lead, 2-1. Cline's left field long ball was the third in her career.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead 6-1 with a four-run fourth inning.

Despite a leadoff walk from junior infielder Kylee Stacy in the fourth inning and a one-out single in the sixth from graduate outfielder Jolie Privett, CU was unable to get any more runs across as it fell 6-1.

Senior pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts (5-4) took the loss, pitching 4.0 innings and giving up five earned runs while striking out four. Freshman pitcher Josi Ervin pitched three scoreless innings of relief only allowing two hits and collecting one strikeout.

Game 2: Charleston 5 – Concord 0
Following a scoreless first two innings from both teams, UC broke the silence with two runs in the top of the third.

Stacy responded with a two-out hit in the bottom of the third inning, but the rally was cut short as Charleston led 2-0 after three.

The Golden Eagles plated another run in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth to lead 5-0.

Junior infielder Courtney Raines was hit by a pitch to start the seventh inning followed by freshman infielder Kendall Morgan reaching base on a fielder's choice. With two outs in the seventh, sophomore pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis singled through the right side and moved Morgan to third base. A strikeout would end the game as CU fell 5-0.

Raines took two hit by pitches to reach first base twice in the game.

Hollis fell to 5-4 in the circle, allowing five runs over seven innings of work.

The Mountain Lions host West Virginia State for a doubleheader at the CU Softball Field Sunday starting a 2:00 p.m.
