Concord Defeats Emory & Henry, 9-7

EMORY, Va. – The Concord University picked up a 9-7 win in non-conference action at Emory & Henry Tuesday afternoon at Porterfield-DeVault Field.

The Mountain Lions (7-5) put together three multi-run innings as part of their scoring.

Three run-scoring singles were part of a three-run first inning for CU. After the first two batters reached base to start the game, senior infielder Daniel Layne drove in junior utility MJ Hunter. Senior infielder Chris Satcher kept the line moving with an RBI single into left field. And two batters later, a fielder's choice brought in Layne.

Emory & Henry (3-19) rebounded from an early 4-1 deficit as it took a 5-4 lead after five innings, paced a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
However, CU immediately responded with a three-run sixth.

Freshman catcher Marshall Basham led off the inning with a home run out to left field to tie the game. After a one-out single by Hunter, Saryeldin blasted a two-run homer to push the Mountain Lions back in front, 7-5.

Satcher was in the middle of the scoring in the top of the eighth. Hunter collected his third hit of the day to start the frame before stealing second base. A walk to Saryeldin and a sacrifice bunt moved a pair of runners into scoring position for Satcher to plate Hunter and Saryeldin with a ground single through the right side.

The insurance runs were important as E&H got two runs closer in the eighth with a home run. However, junior pitcher Rylee Nicholas got the final two outs in the inning. And Hunter tossed a perfect ninth inning to secure his first save of the year.

Graduate pitcher Eddie Blake (2-1) was the winner on the mound as he pitched the fifth and sixth innings.

Saryeldin matched Hunter's three hits with a 3-for-4 showing. He added three runs scored and three RBI. Satcher was 2-of-4 with three RBI.

The Mountain Lions get Mountain East Conference play underway 1:00 p.m. Saturday when they travel to Frostburg State for a doubleheader.
