Concord Sweeps Winston-Salem State, Pushes Win Streak to Seven

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Concord University softball team took two games from Winston-Salem State, 5-2 and 8-3, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

Concord improves to 7-1 and extends its winning streak to seven games with Saturday's victories. WSSU is now 1-8.

Game 1: Concord 5 – Winston-Salem State 2
CU led 3-0 after three innings and never relinquished the lead.

Junior infielder Kylee Stacy got Concord off to a 1-0 lead as she scored in the first inning, after getting on base with a leadoff single.

Stacy was in the middle of the offense in the third inning as she walked following a leadoff triple from freshman infielder Kendall Morgan. After Stacy stole second base to push two runners into scoring position, Morgan raced home on a wild pitch to double the Concord lead. With Stacy now on third base, she trotted home on an RBI double from sophomore infielder Lacie Lewis.

With the early run support, sophomore pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis retired nine of the first 10 batters she faced before WSSU was able to scratch across a run in the fourth inning.

The Mountain Lions got back on the scoreboard in the sixth inning via an RBI single from junior infielder Kassidy Garvey. And later in the inning, Garvey would touch home on a two-out error by the Rams.

Winston-Salem State scored a run in the bottom of the inning, but freshman pitcher Josi Ervin retired the potential tying run to keep the three-run lead.

Hollis improved to 3-0 on the season by tossing five innings and notching seven strikeouts. Ervin locked down the final six outs for her first career save.

Offensively, Garvey and Lewis both had two hits and an RBI. Stacy scored twice and stole three bases.

Game 2: Concord 8 – Winston-Salem State 3
Trailing 3-1, the Mountain Lions erupted for six runs in the third inning as it coasted to a doubleheader sweep of WSSU.

The first two batters reached to start the third inning on a walk to Stacy and junior infielder Courtney Raines getting hit with a pitch. Lewis followed with a run-scoring single to get Stacy home. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, Garvey was hit to bring a second run in.

Morgan gave the Mountain Lions their first lead of the afternoon with a two-run double before sophomore catcher/utility Kayla Sholter extended the lead with an RBI groundout. And a WSSU error was responsible for the sixth and final run in the game.

After the early offense form Winston-Salem State, senior pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts retired six batters in a row in the third and fourth innings, and only allowed three base runners past first base after the third inning.

Junior outfielder Kayla McCraw accounted for an RBI single in the second inning while Lewis added to her stout day with an RBI double in the sixth.

Lewis once again paced the Concord offense with a 3-for-4 showing that included two doubles and two RBI. Stacy was on base four times (three walks, one hit) and tallied two stolen bases.

Roberts (3-1) went the distance in the circle as she scattered six hits while tying her career high in strikeouts with nine.

CU has a quick around as it travels to Carson-Newman for a Sunday doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
