Concord Falls in Twinbill at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Concord University softball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon as it dropped 6-0 and 9-7 games to Carson-Newman in non-conference action at the Hollifield Softball Complex.

Game 1: Carson-Newman 6 – Concord 0
The Mountain Lions (7-3) were unable to get consistent offense as they were limited to six hits in the opener.

Carson-Newman (4-8) jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings as a two-run home run accounted for the scoring in the first inning, and an RBI double got a run in during the second inning.

CU got two runners on base in the third inning, including one of three hits in the game for junior infielder Kylee Stacy. However, the best threat for Concord came in the fifth inning. Graduate catcher/outfielder Jolie Privett doubled to left center field to lead off the frame before Stacy came up with another base hit two batters later.

A double play squashed the rally as C-N kept its shutout intact.

Stacy accounted for half of Concord's hits with a 3-for-4 showing in the game. Privett was 1-for-2 with a double and a stolen base.

Senior pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts (3-2) was hit with the loss as she gave up six runs and struck out two over 3.1 innings. Freshman pitcher Josi Ervin tossed 2.2 shutout innings of relief.

Game 2: Carson-Newman 9 – Concord 7
A back-and-forth affair saw C-N have the biggest inning as a five-run fifth was the difference in the game.

CU scored first as a sacrifice fly by freshman infielder Kendall Morgan plated Stacy after her leadoff single to begin the game. The Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.

Both teams got a run in the third inning with Morgan doubling home sophomore infielder Lacie Lewis after she reached on a dropped third strike in what would have been the second out of the inning.

Down 3-2, Concord briefly took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth.

Three of the first four batters found their way on base in the frame, to load the bases for junior infielder Kassidy Garvey. She came up with an infield single to tie the game, and then a fielder's choice scored junior outfielder Delaney Fulk who was pinch running in the inning.

The 4-3 edge was quickly erased in the bottom of the fifth by Carson-Newman with its five-run rally.

The Mountain Lions were able to get a run back in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout from Morgan. But, C-N responded with two scores in the bottom half.

Concord was not done as in the seventh the Maroon and Gray received an RBI double from sophomore catcher/utility Morgan Gleason and a sacrifice fly by Stacy cut the margin to 9-7.

At the bottom of the order, Garvey and junior infielder Courtney Raines were both 2-for-3. Sophomore pitcher/infielder Madison Hollis and Privett each added two hits. Morgan drove in three runs, despite just one hit.

Hollis (3-1) was charged with her first loss of the season, tossing four innings and giving up six earned runs.

Concord returns to the diamond when travels to Bluefield State 1:00 p.m. Friday.
