RALLY CATS
Concord overcame deficits of 5-1 and 12-9 to defeat Bluefield State in the season opener Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field. Junior utility MJ Hunter provided a go-ahead, two-run single as part of a five-run eighth inning as CU won 14-12. A wild pitch scored junior outfielder Austin Amtower to tie the game before Hunter's two-run single. The win for the Mountain Lions came despite being outhit 17-10 in the game—being the second win in the last three dating back to last year's MEC Tournament versus Wheeling. Sunday's win was the first time Concord overcame a multi-run deficit in the eighth inning or later since March 2020 versus Pitt-Johnstown, a 7-6 win in 11 innings.

BE PATIENT UP THERE

Though it was outhit by Bluefield State, CU drew 11 walks in the game. Fifth-year senior infielder Zack Saryeldin was responsible for four base on balls while sophomore utility Dawson Gragg and senior infielder Chris Satcher both drew two walks in the game. It was the most walks for the Mountain Lions since a 12-0 win over Davis & Elkins last season when it also drew 11 walks. The 11 walks on Sunday turned into five runs for Concord. Saryeldin is closing in on top 10 in program history in walks as he is now up to 70 in his career, and tenth in program history is 74 held by Donovan Huffer (2007-10).

PLENTY OF OFFENSE
The last two series between Concord and Pitt-Johnstown has featured 145 runs over six games with the fewest runs scored in any game being 16. Concord won the first game of the series last spring as it picked up a 17-8 win before UPJ took the second and third games of the set. In his start on the mound, graduate pitcher Andrew Neff tossed six innings, giving up six earned runs and striking out six. On Sunday, Neff became the program's all-time strikeout leader with 237 punchouts. In his career, Satcher is 12-for-22 versus Pitt-Johnstown with three doubles and seven RBI. Saryeldin has nine career hits versus UPJ with four coming on doubles. He has eight career RBI against the Mountain Cats. Junior pitcher Rylee Nicholas was the winning pitcher two years ago versus UPJ as he tossed three innings of relief, giving up just one run on three hits.
