HOT HAND
Senior guard
Sanaiya Morris kept her scoring streak going, scoring a career-best 29 points in an 81-73 road victory at Salem on Saturday. The McCalla, Alabama native had scored exactly 15 points in three consecutive games leading up to the game inside T. Edwards Davis Gymnasium against the Tigers. After scoring nine points in the first half, Morris exploded for a 20-point second half that included going 6-for-6 from the free throw line with less than a minute left in the contest. Heading into Wednesday's matchup against Frostburg State, she stands as Concord's second leading scorer netting 12.7 points per game.
Â
SUPPORT SYSTEM
Morris wasn't the only Mountain Lion putting the ball in the net Saturday, as CU used four double-figure scorers to hold on for the win. Senior guard
Skylar Davidson was the team's next highest leading scorer with 13 points, shooting 50 percent (4-for-8) from the field and knocking down all four free throws she attempted. Junior forward
Abbie Smith found the net on three of her five attempted shots and added five free throws for an 11-point outing. The Little Hocking, Ohio native has scored double-digit points in all 10 games played this season. The final player in double figures was graduate forward
Trina Lewis with 10 points. After scoring just seven points in her first five games, Lewis has notched at least 10 points in three of her last five outings.
Â
SHUT 'EM DOWN
Defense turned into offense for the Mountain Lions Saturday, using full-court pressure to force Salem into 28 turnovers, the third most this season. The 28 turnovers on the defensive side of the floor converted into 32 points off turnovers for Concord including 20 in the first half. The Maroon and Gray picked away 12 steals led by Morris, Davidson, and sophomore guard
Madison Young with three steals each. Lewis, junior guard
Kennedy Scales, and junior guard
Carolynn Washington added one steal each to round out the defensive effort.
Â
OUT FOR REVENGE
After being swept in the regular season series against Frostburg State, CU rallied to knock off the number three-seeded Bobcats in the Quarterfinals of the MEC Tournament, 84-69, last March. The Mountain Lions trailed 34-32 at the halftime break and used 52 points in the second half to complete the upset. Smith tied her career-high of 30 points in the game, going 9-for-14 from the field (64.2 percent) and 12-for-12 from the charity stripe. Concord regained advantage at the 8:54 mark of the third quarter and never looked back, building a double-digit lead to start the fourth quarter and eventually closing out a 15-point win.
Â
TO THE WIRE
The regular season series went to FSU, but only by a combined three points. In the Carter Center last December, the game went down to the final minute to decide the victor. The Mountain Lions and Bobcats were knotted 37-37 at halftime and both teams held the advantage with under a minute on the clock, but FSU forced a defensive stop as time expired to win 74-73. The game featured 10 ties and seven lead changes. The second matchup in Bobcat Arena was no different, as the game came down to the final buzzer. The teams tied once again at halftime (40-40) and led with under a minute remaining, but an FSU buzzer beater sealed the regular season sweep for the Bobcats, 83-81.
Â
PLENTY OF POINTS
CU's defense will have its hands full Wednesday as it faces the leading scorer in Division II Emilee Weakley. Frostburg State's senior forward averages 29.7 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game while shooting 52.4 percent from the floor and 39.6 percent from beyond the tree-point line. In her last game against West Virginia State, Weakley scored 40 points, her third 40-point performance this season. Against the Mountain Lions, Weakley is averaging 22.4 points per game in five career outings against the Maroon and Gray. After scoring 34 points against CU in Bobcat Arena last winter, Concord held Weakley to 6-for-22 (27.2 percent) shooting in the MEC Quarterfinal meeting.
