ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team eased its way past Glenville State, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.
The Mountain Lions (11-6-1, 10-4-1 MEC) got braces in the contest from freshman midfielder
Marika Svensson and freshman forward
Ailsa Swinburne while senior defender
Leah Fleming added the fifth goal in the 71
st minute.
CU needed 28 minutes to light up the scoreboard for the first time in the game as Svensson looped a goal in after GSU (7-9-2, 4-9-1 MEC) misplayed a ball in the penalty area. With time winding down in the first half, Swinburne netted her fourth goal of the year in the 43
rd minute after a corner kick could not be completely cleared by the Pioneers.
Svensson completed her second brace of the season—her tenth goal—the 66
th minute before Swinburne notched her first career brace on a corner kick served by Fleming in the 69
th minute. And just 20 seconds after Swinburne's goal, Fleming scored her eighth goal off an assist from freshman forward
Taryn Kelly.
Before the Concord onslaught between the 66
th and 70
th minutes, Glenville State had chances get within one or even tie the contest. However, freshman goalkeeper
Maddie Loughborough made two of her three saves for the game in the 56
th and 60
th minutes to keep the eventual clean sheet for the Mountain Lions.
Concord owned a 17-10 shots advantage in the game. Fleming hit for four shots while Svensson and Swinburne each took three.
The Mountain Lions' next game will be the MEC Tournament Quarterfinals Sunday. Opponent and location will be announced Thursday.
