Concord Falters in MEC Quarterfinals at Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team had its season ended Sunday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to Fairmont State in the Mountain East Conference Tournament Quarterfinals at Duvall-Rosier Field.

The season ends for CU at 11-7-1 overall. Fairmont State improves to 12-6-1.

Concord scored first in the game with freshman forward Ailsa Swinburne netting her sixth goal of the year in the 24th minute.

Swinburne was able to score after senior forward Sydney Tucker's initial shot was saved by Fairmont State goalkeeper Olivia Johnston, however, the rebound squirted right to Swinburne who was crashing toward the goal. The chance was set up by stellar possession and control from senior defender Leah Fleming through the midfield.

Both teams took six shots in the first half as CU and freshman goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough kept FSU off the board in the first 45 minutes.

The Fighting Falcons scored after a turnover in the back in the 57th minute and netted the game-winning goal in the 81st minute.

After both teams took six shots in the first half, Fairmont State owned a 12-1 advantage in total shots in the second half.

Tucker took three of Concord's shots with one on goal. Freshman midfielder Tiana Campbell, senior midfielder Anna Davis, Swinburne and junior forward Caitlin Webster all had one shot in the contest.

Loughborough tied her career high with seven saves.

The four-year members of the Concord senior class finishes their careers with 55 wins and two NCAA Tournament appearances.
