Concord's Comeback at Charleston Comes Up Short

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team dropped its final regular season road game of the year, 4-2, against Charleston Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest at the Welch Athletic Complex.

CU (10-6-1, 9-4-1 MEC) fell behind 4-0 through 42 minutes before senior defender Leah Fleming got the Mountain Lions on the board eight seconds with left in the first half. The Arbroth, Scotland native converted a near 30-yard free kick into her sixth goal of the season.

Concord was able to hold Charleston (14-3, 13-1 MEC) in the second half as it continued to cut into the Golden Eagles' lead. In the 67th minute, senior forward Sydney Tucker scored her MEC-best 16th goal of the season to trim the deficit to 4-2.

However, it was as close as the Mountain Lions the rest of the way as they had their five-game winning streak snapped.

Both teams pushed 10 shots on goals with Concord owning a slight 14-13 edge in total shots. Tucker took a game-high six shots while Fleming, freshman midfielder Marika Svensson and junior forward Caitlin Webster each registered two shots.

Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough stopped six shots.

The Mountain Lions close the regular season at home 1:00 p.m. Wednesday versus Glenville State.
