Concord Ends Road Slate with Four-Set Win at Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team defeated Mountain East Conference foe Davis & Elkins 3-1 in the final road game of the regular season Tuesday evening at the McDonnell Center.
With the win, CU moves to 15-15 overall and 8-6 in the MEC while D&E falls to 7-16 and 3-12 against MEC competition. The final set scores were 26-24, 25-21, 22-25, and 25-21.
Set 1
Trailing 8-3 early in the first frame, CU scored 10 straight points to lead by five. Three consecutive Senators' errors kickstarted the run followed by a kill from sophomore outside hitter Meg Williams and a block by sophomore middle hitter Meagan Poticher and freshman middle hitter Ella Moss. Senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant kept the rally going with a service ace and Williams capped off the run with another kill. D&E stormed back to retake the advantage, 19-18, but Williams responded with three kills late in the game followed by a service ace from sophomore setter Paige Richmond to take a 1-0 lead, 26-24.

Set 2
CU got the second frame underway scoring nine of the first 10 points. Sophomore right side Natalie Brown and Williams picked up kills during the spurt while Moss picked up another block. Sophomore setter Declyn Tooze jumped in on the attack, serving an ace to extend the edge to 14-4. Pilant picked up a pair of kills throughout the remainder of the set to hold off a Davis &Elkins run as CU took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set 3
Brown, Williams, and freshman outside hitter Caelyn Wise picked up kills as both teams jockeyed for position and the score was locked 10-10. Following a D&E scoring spurt, Brown picked up a pair of blocks assisted by Wise and Pilant to close in on the Senators' advantage, 21-15. Then, CU charged a 7-1 run led by two kills from Williams and two team blocks but fell short as Davis & Elkins took the set, 25-22.

Set 4
Brown hit for three kills along with Williams and Anderson to grab a 9-3 lead to start the fourth game. Three consecutive Senators' errors brought the advantage back to five, 14-9. Then, Pilant connected on back-to-back kills to lead 17-11. Anderson held off a late D&E surge, hitting for two kills followed by an ace from Richmond that sealed the victory, 25-21.

Match Stats
Williams led all players with 17 kills in the match after logging 12 in the first two sets. Brown (8 kills) and Pilant (6) were also top contributors on the offensive end. Richmond led CU with 18 assists and three aces followed by Tooze with 14 assists and two aces. Defensively, sophomore defensive specialist Allie Davis recorded 23 digs. Anderson hauled in six blocks and Moss followed with a new career-high of four blocks. Williams also contributed four blocks on the defensive side.
