Concord Uses Big Second Half to Down Salem, 3-0

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team scored three times in the second half to get past Salem, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Callaghan Stadium.

The first half featured just four combined shots, with none on target for either team.

However, action picked up quickly in the second half. The Mountain Lions (5-2-2) had a chance in the 50th minute, but was whistled for offsides, and in the 52nd minute sophomore forward Ignacio Alvarez Maina half-volleyed a shot that just missed the target.

But, in the 57th minute CU broke through with junior midfielder Patrick Alouidor sliding a pass down the line for freshman midfielder Kyle Gordon to score his second goal in as many games from the top of the six-yard box.

Just six minutes later, Concord struck as junior midfielder Darian Bradshaw threaded a through ball onto the foot of junior forward Richard Henry down the right flank. Henry beat the defender and the goalkeeper for his third goal of the season.

The Mountain Lions continued the attack as they took 14 shots in the second half, but did not score again until 88th minute when a corner kick could not be cleared away cleanly by Salem (2-8). Junior defender Kai Forsyth roofed his first goal of the season, and second of his career.

CU's back line of junior Julian Correa, Forsyth, sophomore Zakari Messam and junior Ted Roberts as well as second-half substitute junior Erik Lotysz kept Salem quiet, limiting the Tigers to three shots and none on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Nathan Scargill did not have to make a save in recording his second shutout of the year.

Seven of the 17 shots were on frame for Concord. Henry tallied three shots while Alvarez, Bradshaw and Gordon all had two.

The Mountain Lions head to Wheeling for a Mountain East Conference game 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
