ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost 3-0 to West Virginia State Tuesday night in a Mountain East Conference match at the Carter Center.
The set scores were 25-12, 25-20, 25-18.
Set 1
The Mountain Lions (12-14, 5-5 MEC) held their own early on with the MEC South Division-leading Yellow Jackets (15-9, 9-1 MEC) as back-to-back kills from sophomore outside hitter
Chloe Thompson and
Meg Williams as well as a WVSU error capped a three-point spurt to bring CU within 8-7. However, West Virginia State ripped off the next 11 points to stretch its lead to 19-7. Concord never got closer than 11 for the remainder of the set.
Set 2
Neither team could find momentum early on as the sides stayed within one point of each other until WVSU led 10-8. A kill from sophomore right side
Natalie Brown pushed Concord within 11-10. But, the Yellow Jackets restored a seven-point lead with a 7-1 run. A kill by graduate middle hitter
Kyndra Pilant got the Mountain Lions to within 19-14, but WVSU kept CU at arm's length for the remainder of set—with Concord only getting as close as four.
Set 3
After West Virginia State opened up a 9-5 lead, the Mountain Lions came back with back-to-back Thompson kills keeping CU in the game at 10-8 and 11-9. However, three quick points by the Yellow Jackets forced a Concord timeout. A kill from Brown kept the Maroon and Gray to within 17-13, but West Virginia State powered its way to a seven-point win in the set.
Match Stats
No Concord player got to double-digit kills. Thompson led the way with nine kills while Brown collected seven. Sophomore setter
Paige Richmond notched 15 assists and a pair of service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist
Allie Davis tallied 13 digs, and Pilant had a hand in four blocks (one solo, three assisted).
The Mountain Lions host Fairmont State 7:00 p.m. Friday in an MEC contest.
