ATHENS, W.Va. – A goal from senior forward
Sydney Tucker with eight seconds remaining lifted the Concord University women' soccer team to a 4-3 win over West Virginia State Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.
The Mountain Lions (9-5-1, 8-3-1 MEC) let a 3-1 halftime lead slip away as West Virginia State (10-3-2, 9-2-1 MEC) scored in the 55
th and 57
th minutes of the contest to tie the game at 3-3.
With the game tied, CU had to withstand a continued surge by the Yellow Jackets as freshman goalkeeper
Maddie Loughborough made three of her seven saves between the 60
th and 87
th minutes to keep the game deadlocked.
Offensively, the Mountain Lions were equaling the pressure of WVSU as they had corner kicks in the 79
th, 82
nd, 84
th and 86
th minutes, but could not capitalize. On a corner kick with 1:09 left, West Virginia State was unable to cleanly clear the attempt, eventually resulting in a foul from just outside the penalty area with 14 seconds remaining.
Senior defender
Leah Fleming's initial shot was blocked, but a deflection took the ball right onto the foot of sophomore defender
Caitlyn Martin who tic-tack-toed a pass to senior forward
Nora Voisey, and Voisey slid a pass to Tucker for the goal.
The Yellow Jackets scored in the sixth minute off a corner kick, but freshman midfielder
Tiana Campbell scored in the 24
th and 30
th minutes around a third goal in the 28
th minute from junior forward
Caitlin Webster.
Voisey notched her first assist of the day on Webster's goal while both of Campbell's goals were unassisted.
CU was outshot 19-12 in the game, but four of the five shots on goal by the Mountain Lions found the back of the net. Campbell took four total while Tucker added three attempts. Loughborough's seven saves established a new career high.
The Mountain Lions head to Davis & Elkins 5:00 p.m. Wednesday in an MEC tilt.
