ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team scored three times in the final nine minutes to take down Davis & Elkins, 3-1, in a Mountain East Conference matchup at Callaghan Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The game went scoreless for more than 80 minutes until Davis & Elkins (6-5-3, 4-5-2 MEC) committed a handball in the penalty area and set CU (11-2-2, 10-1-2 MEC) up with a penalty kick. Sophomore forward
Syrus Conolly stepped up and hit the penalty kick—his second in the last week, and his sixth goal of the year.
With just over nine minutes remaining, the Senators were unfazed as they connected on a free kick goal from 25 yards in the 84
th minute.
However, the Mountain Lions had an answer 1:43 later. Off a corner kick from junior defender
Ted Roberts, junior defender
Kai Forsyth headed the ball from the far post back to the top of the six-yard box where sophomore forward
Ignacio Alvarez Maina struck for his fifth goal of the fall.
Desperate for a tie, Davis & Elkins sent everyone forward on a set piece, including the goalkeeper, in the 89
th minute. The Senators were unable to convert on the try which left sophomore defender
Zakari Messam needing to beat one player. After getting by the final player, Messam tapped in his second goal of the year with less than minute remaining.
Between the second and third Concord goals, the Senators' best chance to tie the game came on a penalty kick that was missed wide left.
Concord held a small 12-10 advantage in total shot. Conolly attempted four shots while Alvarez recorded three shots. As a team, CU took seven corner kicks to Davis & Elkins' four.
The Mountain Lions play consecutive non-conference games starting at Emory & Henry 5:00 p.m. Wednesday.
