WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over West Liberty Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference matchup at the West Family Complex.
The Mountain Lions (10-2-2, 9-1-2 MEC) extend their winning streak to six games, and the win gives CU just its second 10-win season in program history. The 2000 team that won 13 games is the only other time Concord has won double-digit games in a single season.
Senior forward
Fabian Amhof got CU on the board in the 15
th minute as he netted his second goal of the season. After playing out of the back, a pass into the box was settled by Amhof who turned and fired a shot to the corner of the goal.
Playing a man down since the 14
th minute and trailing 1-0 didn't deter West Liberty (5-7-2, 3-7-1 MEC) as the Hilltoppers scored from a free kick in the 59
th minute.
However, the Mountain Lions rallied back with a goal in the 76
th minute as Amhof gave Concord the lead for good. Senior midfielder
Raheem Baptiste set up the goal by winning the ball on a tackle outside the penalty area. Once getting the ball, Amhof's first attempt at goal was blocked, but he recovered for the decisive goal in the game.
Junior goalkeeper
Nathan Scargill was called on to make two saves in the final 11 minutes to keep Concord in front. Scargill made five saves in total.
West Liberty held a 13-12 shots advantage with CU putting one more shot on goal, 7-6, than WLU. All three of Amhof's shots were on target. Sophomore forward
Ignacio Alvarez Maina added two shots on goal.
Concord recorded five corner kicks in the game while West Liberty had four.
The Mountain Lions return to Callaghan Stadium 3:30 p.m. Sunday to face Davis & Elkins.
