Concord Rallies for 2-1 Win Over Point Park

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team stormed back from a one-goal deficit to defeat Point Park, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.

Even though CU (8-2-2, 7-1-2, MEC) outshot the Pioneers (5-6-1, 3-6-1 MEC) in the first half, 7-3, it was Point Park that held a 1-0 advantage at halftime thanks in part to a 16th-minute goal.

With much of the momentum of the second half on the side of the Mountain Lions, it wasn't until the 78th minute that Concord equalized.

A Concord corner kick was only able to be cleared approximately 40 yards from goal, a cross came back in towards the box. With junior defender Kai Forsyth still in the attacking area, he flipped a pass down the left flank to fellow junior defender Julian Correa who found junior midfielder Malher Santi Possu for the goal.

Less than four minutes later, CU was back on the attack.

Another cross from the right foot of sophomore defender Zakari Messam was fed into the penalty area. After a quick touch by junior forward Richard Henry, Possu scored his second goal of the game to push Concord up 2-1.

The Mountain Lions continued the pressure in the attacking third of the field as Henry had two opportunities to put the game away in the final minute, but was stopped by Point Park goalkeeper David Ali.

Wednesday was the first time this year that Concord trailed at halftime and came back to win.

In his return, Possu tied for the team lead in shots taken with five—Possu had not been in game action for three weeks due to injury. Henry also took five shots as the duo combined for 10 of Concord's 19 shots.

The Mountain Lions held PPU to four shots for the game. In addition to his assist on the second goal, Messam took a potential goal off the line in the 15th minute.

CU remains at home 3:30 p.m. Sunday as it hosts West Virginia Wesleyan.
