Concord Edged by Frostburg State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team was defeated by Frostburg State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium.

Frostburg State (9-1-1, 7-0-1 MEC) jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first half with a goal from distance in the 41st minute—that came as the Bobcats controlled the final 20 minutes of the opening half.

CU (5-5-1, 4-3-1 MEC) was only able to put one shot on goal in the first half, a chance from junior forward Caitlin Webster. With still just three shots in the game through 64 minutes, Concord began to apply pressure.

Freshman forward Ailsa Swinburne had a shot blocked in the 65th minute, and seven seconds later senior forward Sydney Tucker fired a shot off the block from Swinburne's attempt. In the 66th minute, a left-footed shot from freshman midfielder Marika Svensson missed the target.

Despite the chances by the Mountain Lions, it was Frostburg State that had the game's next goal with the Bobcats pushing a score across in the 74th minute.

But, just 76 seconds after FSU's second goal, Tucker answered with her ninth goal of the season coming from a corner kick that wasn't cleared away from the Bobcats. Tucker was able to sky above the backline and head the ball across the goal line.

Freshman midfielder Tiana Campbell and Tucker both had looks at goal in the 82nd minute, including Tucker pushing a shot high from the top of the penalty box.

The Bobcats were able to fend off CU for the one-goal win.

All three goals in the game were unassisted.

With the late surge, Concord outshot Frostburg State 10-9 in the game. Tucker led all players in the game with three shots. Freshman defender Ella Rowell tallied two shots, and her shot on goal needed a spectacular save to keep the game at 2-1 in the 81st minute.

The Mountain Lions welcome Point Park to Callaghan Stadium 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.
