QUICK HANDS
Even though fifth-year senior forward Jevon Laidler scored just seven points in Wednesday's loss at Charleston, the Miami, Florida native found other ways to put his imprint on the game. Laidler snatched five rebounds and had a career-best five steals against the Golden Eagles. Laidler became the first CU player with five or more steals in a game since Tommy Bolte collected five steals in a game at West Liberty in January 2019. Perhaps the most surprising thing about Laidler's defensive game at Charleston was the fact that he entered Wednesday with just four total steals on the season. Laidler is just one of nine players in the MEC this season with five or more steals in a single game. As a team, Concord only averages 4.9 steals per game.

MR. IMPACT
Sophomore guard Kollin Tolbert continued his exceptional play in Wednesday's contest against Charleston. The Cincinnati, Ohio native dropped in a season-high 22 points and added a team-best seven rebounds. It was the sixth time this season, and the fourth consecutive contest, that Tolbert has led or shared the team lead in rebounding this winter. Since scoring eight points at West Virginia Wesleyan—his third-lowest total of the year—Tolbert has popped off four straight double-digit scoring games that has featured two 20-point games. Over those four contests, Tolbert is averaging 19.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while shooting 48.9 percent (24-for-49) from the field and 83.8 percent (26-for-31) at the foul line. Tolbert's 5.9 defensive rebounds this season are first among all MEC players and his total rebounds per game of 6.9 are fourth.

DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE
Perhaps lost in the defeat at Charleston was Concord's defensive effort against the most efficient offense in Division II. UC entered the game shooting 53.3 percent from the field for the year. However, the Mountain Lions limited Charleston to 38.3 percent shooting as CU outshot the Golden Eagles (41.4-38.3). As part of the defensive intensity, the Maroon and Gray held Charleston without a made field goal for 7:37 of the second half. Wednesday marked the second time this season that Concord has held an opponent for six or more minutes without a made shot after accomplishing the feat first across the first and second halves at Salem. CU's defensive field-goal percentage of 40.4 is second in the MEC, and 17th in Division II.

DEFEND THE ARC
Concord's defensive percentages are paced by the Mountain Lions' ability to defend the three-point line in their trademark pack line defense under head coach Todd May. Concord is giving just 29.9 percent from beyond the arc, tops in the MEC and 15th in Division II. CU is allowing an average of 7.1 three-pointers per game which ranks fourth in the conference. Facing a barrage of three-point attempts each game, the Maroon and Gray has only surrendered 10 or more three-pointers three times in 2023-24. Glenville State enters Saturday hitting 10.1 three-pointers per game, 23rd in Division II. GSU has made 10 or more three-pointers nine times this season, and is coming off 12 triples in Wednesday's road contest against West Virginia State.

UP AND DOWN
The last 10 games between Concord and Glenville State has featured the winner scoring at least 80 points, including two GSU wins last season, 81-79 and 85-81. The Mountain Lions won twice in 2021-22, 90-80 and 86-82. The last time neither team scored 80 points in the Concord-Glenville State matchup was February 1, 2017 when CU won 74-71 at Glenville State. And last year's point total of 160 at GSU was the lowest combined scoring game between the two sides since the February 2017 meeting. At Glenville State last January, both teams shot 46 percent from the field, but Glenville State's 11 three-pointers to CU's seven was the difference in the game. Last year's contest at CU featured 11 lead changes and seven ties.

CORE FOUR
The quartet of senior guard JJ Harper, Laidler, junior forward Amare Smith and senior guard Jordan Wooden have the most experience for the Mountain Lions with Laidler, Smith and Wooden all having played at least 70 games. And all four have stellar numbers versus Glenville State. Harper scored in double figures in both games against GSU last season (17 points and 11 points) while shooting a combined 45.8 percent (11-for-24). In four career games, Laidler is averaging 16.2 points per game against Glenville State while shooting 51.1 percent from the field. Smith has hit for 10.7 points per game versus GSU and has made 60.7 percent (17-for-28) of his shots. Due to injury, Wooden will suit up in his just fourth career game versus GSU, but the Roanoke, Virginia native is averaging 10.3 points per game in three previous contests. Last season at Glenville State, Wooden made four three-pointers as part of his 14 points.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
22- Number of three-pointers for Glenville State in two games versus Concord last year.

80- CU is 7-1 when holding the opponent under 80 points this season with the only loss coming Wednesday at Charleston.

217- Combined number of games played by Wooden (74), Laidler (73) and Smith (70) in their CU careers.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
First-year head coach Bob Bolen, the longtime successful coach at former NAIA powerhouse Mountain State, brought in nine transfers (five Division I or II players and four junior college players). Among those transfers is the Pioneers' second-leading scorer in Seattle transfer Dominiq Penn (14.2 points per game). One of the few holdovers from last year's roster, Jordan Smith, is netting a team-best 14.3 points per game while passing out 4.5 assists per contest. Marshall transfer Devin Collins scores 12.8 points per game and adds a team-high 5.9 rebounds per game. GSU is 2-6 in games played away from the Waco Center this season.
