Concord Falls Short in Home Opener Against Emory & Henry

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team was defeated 3-0 by Emory & Henry on Tuesday inside the Carter Center in a non-conference match.
 
Final Score: Emory & Henry 3 – Concord 0 (25-21, 25-12, 28-26)
 
Set 1
The Wasps came out hot, beginning the game on a 11-3 run. A CU charge led by freshman outside hitter Meg Williams and freshman outside hitter Chloe Thompson would bring the Mountain Lions to within three points, 17-14. E&H would close out the set, though, 25-21. Williams tallied six kills and Thompson collected five in the opening frame.
 
Set 2
Williams and Thompson came out swinging again early in the second set, bringing the score to 10-7 in favor of Emory & Henry. A pair of kills from senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant followed, but Concord would drop the set, 25-12.
 
Set 3
Early kills from freshman right side Natalie Brown and senior middle hitter Csayjah Whitelow kept CU within reach early on. The Mountain Lions bounced back from a five-point deficit to even the set at 21-21. A back-and-forth would ensue, as neither team led by more than a point as both Williams and Thompson would equalize the Emory & Henry attack. Emory & Henry wrapped up the game by a final score of 28-26 on a kill.
 
Match Stats
Williams led CU with 14 kills, followed by Thompson with 12. Brown totaled five kills on 10 attempts with two blocks. Pilant and Whitelow added three kills apiece. Freshman setter Paige Richmond had 17 assists with 11 digs for a double-double, while freshman setter Declyn Tooze had 14 assists. Freshman defensive specialist Allie Davis collected 11 digs.
 
Concord will head to Carrolton, Ga. on Friday September 8 to participate in a five-team tournament hosted by West Georgia. The Mountain Lions will play West Georgia at 10:00 a.m. on Friday followed by Georgia College at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday (September 9), CU will face St. Augustine's at 10:00 a.m. and Emory & Henry at 12:00 p.m.
