BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team used three second-half goals to pull away from Salem in a 3-0 win Sunday afternoon at the YMCA Cline Complex.
After the game featured just five total shots, and one on frame, in the first half, junior midfielder
Elvis Gomez opened the scoring in the 54
th minute. With possession in the midfield, the Mountain Lions (1-0) came racing up the flank as junior midfielder
Andre Nicholson found fellow junior midfielder
Armando Ramirez. Instead of having his own look at goal, Ramirez sent a pass to Gomez down the left side of the penalty area where he blasted a shot into the net.
Ramirez was right in the middle of the action in the 61
st minute. On a counter attempt, junior midfielder
Alessandro Raffl found Ramirez at the top of the six-yard box. As Ramirez controlled possession, he was taken down by the Salem goalkeeper and was awarded a penalty.
Sophomore midfielder
Tomas Kelly stepped up at buried the penalty kick in the bottom right corner of the net to double the Concord lead.
Nicholson closed the scoring in the 89
th minute as sophomore defender
Andre Sardinha sent a deep cross from the midfield area into the left corner of the six-yard area to junior forward
Fabian Amhof. A second cross came back across the face of the goal from Amhof to Nicholson who roofed a shot into the back of the net.
Concord outshot Salem 12-7 in the contest and held the Tigers (0-2) without a shot on target until the 55

Keegan Grant made three saves to earn the clean sheet.
Nicholson and Ramirez both had four shots for CU. Gomez came off the bench to provide two shots on goal.
The Mountain Lions travel to West Liberty 6:00 p.m. Wednesday for the first Mountain East Conference game of the season.
