Concord Overpowers Fairmont State in 8-2 Win

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team kept up its recent scoring prowess with an 8-2 win over Fairmont State Wednesday afternoon at the YMCA Cline Complex in a Mountain East Conference game.

Coming off a 6-0 win over Glenville State Sunday, the Mountain Lions (4-2-1, 4-1 MEC) posted a season-best eight goals in the victory over FSU (3-4-1, 2-3 MEC).

With Wednesday's win, head coach Luke Duffy became the winningest coach in program history with his 88th victory on the sidelines, surpassing Steve Barrett.

Freshman midfielder Wilma Hedenberg who had a hand in three CU goals got the scoring started in the eighth minute. It would only take Concord three minutes to double the lead as Hedenberg assisted on junior forward Nora Voisey's second goal on the season in the 11th minute.

Just 64 seconds after Voisey's tally, Fairmont State found the back of the net.

The score remained 2-1 until the 36th minute when graduate forward Alex Todd struck for her first goal of the season. Junior forward Sydney Tucker extended the lead in the 41st minute with her fourth goal of the season, and third in the last two games.

But, the Fighting Falcons took some momentum into halftime as they scored off a free kick with 53 seconds remaining before the intermission.

From there, the Mountain Lions took over in the final 45 minutes.

Junior midfielder Anna Davis picked loose ball in the box in the 52nd minute and tallied her first goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Neville did the same in the 58th minute as she pounced on a ball inside the 18-yard box for her first goal of the fall.

Hedenberg completed her brace in the 74th minute on an unassisted.

And the scoring was concluded when senior defender Sophie Clutter registered her first collegiate coal with 49 seconds remaining in the contest.

Hedenberg posted five points on the day while Todd recorded three.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Pattillo made three saves.

Concord outshot FSU 21-8 and had a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The Mountain Lions wrap up their three-game homestand 1:00 p.m. Friday versus West Virginia Wesleyan.
