Concord Edges Emory & Henry in 2-1 Victory

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team used two-second half goals to pick up a 2-1 win over Emory & Henry in a non-conference matchup at the YMCA Cline Complex Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams had chances in the first 45 minutes of the game as they combined for 15 shots in the opening half of play.

CU (2-2-3) struck first in the 50th minute.

Junior midfielder Andre Nicholson picked up a loose ball in the midfield and found freshman forward Ignacio Maina who proceeded to take a couple of touches at the top of the 18-yard box and fire a shot past the Emory & Henry (0-7) goalkeeper.

Just 71 seconds after Alvarez's goal, the Mountain Lions nearly doubled their lead as a shot by junior forward Fabian Amhof ricocheted off the crossbar. The deflection came to sophomore midfielder Tomas Kelly who was taken down in the penalty area.

On the ensuing penalty kick, Kelly had his shot saved by E&H keeper Tyler Catron.

But, the Maroon and Gray would not be denied as they went up 2-0 in the 54th minute.

On a counterattack, Amhof slid a pass to Kelly who notched his second goal of the fall.

Concord was able to keep Emory & Henry down for a majority of the second half as CU had a great chance in the 73rd minute. Sophomore defender Andrew Beohler had a shot saved twice. After the initial attempt went off the Catron, the ball was trickling towards the goal before it was cleared off the line by the E&H defense.

The Wasps got within 2-1 in the 88th minute on an unassisted goal after a deflection.

E&H had one more chance in the 90th minute, but the play was whistled offsides.

Concord owned a 12-6 edge in shots after halftime, and outshot Emory & Henry 20-13 for the game. Just two shots were on goal for the Wasps while CU had seven shots on frame.

Amhof took six shots while sophomore defender Kai Forsyth and Kelly each had three.

CU travels to Notre Dame as it resume Mountain East Conference action 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
