Concord Falls to West Virginia State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost to West Virginia State 3-0 in a Mountain East Conference South Division matchup Tuesday night in the Carter Center.
 
Final Score: West Virginia State 3 – Concord 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-20)
 
Set 1
The Mountain Lions found themselves in a quick 10-3 hole in the opening set. Two kills each from freshman right side Natalie Brown and freshman outside hitter Chloe Thompson knotted the game 10-10. Three kills from freshman outside hitter Meg Williams kept CU within two points, 17-15. However, West Virginia State capitalized on a 4-0 run to take the first set 25-18.
 
Set 2
A kill from senior middle hitter Csayjah Whitelow gave Concord an early 5-4 lead in the second set. The Mountain Lions were resilient, as a 5-0 run fronted by Williams and an ace from freshman setter Declyn Tooze brought CU within three, 19-16. Whitelow added another kill in the closing moments of the second set before the Yellow Jackets closed it out 25-19.
 
Set 3
Seven attack errors from WVSU gave Concord an early 8-7 advantage in set three. Kills from Brown and senior right side Reese Turner kept the Mountain Lions ahead 10-9. But, West Virginia State jumped to a six-point lead on a 6-0 run late in the set. Thompson collected two kills, Williams and Brown one each late in the set before the Yellow Jackets completed the sweep, 25-20.
 
Match Stats
Williams and Brown led all Mountain Lions with seven kills each. Thompson finished with six kills and four digs. Freshman defensive specialist Allie Davis added nine digs for Concord. Tooze led CU with 13 assists to go with eight digs and one ace. Freshman setter Paige Richmond added nine assists. Brown, Whitelow, and senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant shared two blocks each.
 

Concord hits the road Friday to take on MEC South Division rival Charleston at 7:00 p.m. inside H. Bernard Wehrle Innovation Center.
