Concord Loses at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Concord University volleyball team was defeated by Charleston 3-0 in a Mountain East Conference Matchup inside the Bernard Wehrle Innovation Center Friday evening. 

Final Score: Charleston 3, Concord 0 (25-17,25-21,25-19)

Set 1
Kills from freshman outside hitter Chloe Thompson, senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant, and freshman outside hitter Meg Williams jolted CU (10-5, 1-2 MEC) to an 8-2 lead early in the first frame. Williams kept the Golden Eagles (10-6, 2-1 MEC) in check as she hammered five kills in the set. However, Charleston finished the set on an 8-2 run of its own to take a 1-0 lead, 25-18. 

Set 2
The Mountain Lions fell behind early in the second set, but a run led by freshman right side Natalie Brown and senior middle hitter Csayjah Whitelow gave Concord an 8-5 advantage. UC ran off eight straight points to take control. Whitelow finished the set with three kills and freshman Allie Davis added five digs as CU dropped the second set 25-21. 

Set 3
Although Concord would never lead in the set, the Mountain Lions stayed closed as it tied the set at 8-8 and got within 20-18. Freshman setter Paige Richmond collected five assists and an ace in the set and Williams hammered home five more kills as the Mountain Lions would come up short and drop the final set by a final score of 25-19. 

Match Stats
Williams led all players with 14 kills in the match, adding eight digs and a block as well. Pilant finished with six kills and two blocks. Davis tallied 11 digs in the contest. Richmond had 17 assists and an ace, while freshman setter Declan Tooze assisted on 10 CU kills. The Mountain Lions piled up seven blocks with Pilant and Whitelow each recording three.

The Mountain Lions return home to face West Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. inside the Carter Center.
